In the project Grid/Grave I am in the process of assiduously reproducing the bones of an entire deer skeleton in porcelain and by hand. I retrieved the bones from a local mountain highway where road-kills are quite common. The insertion of the fragile, organic, painstakingly hand-made porcelain object into the modular, Modernist grid aims to highlight the limits of rational, taxonomic systems. Bearing witness to this particular and individual deer--translating its body one bone at a time--from a vulnerable and dismembered state into an abiding porcelain permanence, attempts the daunting task of memorialization.
